The right pots and containers

One of the first things you need to start a garden is obviously the pots and containers. If you do not wish to buy heavy pots, you can also make do with old buckets with drain holes, egg crates for the germination phase, or even some hanging pots to save space.

Potting soil

Although potting soil differs from plant to plant, a classic mix of good, organically rich potting soil should be used. Add things like garden soil, sand, cocopeat, neem cakes, organic compost, and the likes to make the soil rich in nutrition.

Seeds and cuttings

When you start your first garden, keep a batch for seeds and another batch of cuttings or full plants. The seeds will help determine which soil composition is good for the plants, and when the plants will start growing more it’ll give you the perfect boost and confidence.

Choose the right space

There are very few plants that can grow without sunlight, and thus the space where you will keep them is very important. If on the balcony, keep the flowering plants and herbs near the sunlight, and keep the indoor plants on the inner side where they get indirect sunlight.

A good quality spray bottle

Not all plants need deep watering, especially not everyday. So for the cold days when the soil feels wet to touch but the leaves look like they need water, buy a good quality spray bottle that will help mist the leaves and stems.

A compost bin

About a month before you start your first garden, start a composting bin. And start dumping your food scraps and other organic waste into it for decomposition. This way, when your plants start growing, you will have organic manure to give them extra nutrition.

A basic gardening kit

Although you don’t need much gardening equipment at the start, a few basics would be nice. Get a trowel for digging the soil, some scissors to prune the dead leaves, a small rake to move the soil around, and a few other essentials.

Supporting trellis

If you are planning to grow heavy fruits and vegetables, a good trellis or supporting sticks would be great for your plants. Buy some wooden or bamboo sticks for small plants, or some wall hooks for the Pothos vines.

Neem oil

The importance of Neem oil cannot be stressed enough! Spraying a mixture of neem oil and water on the plants keeps all types of bugs away and the strong scent keeps flies and bees afar.
