NEW DELHI: Wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul has opened up about his preferred batting position, stating that he is most comfortable in the top order. However, the stylish right-hander emphasised that he is willing to adapt based on the team’s needs.
Rahul, who has batted in multiple positions across formats, acknowledged the importance of flexibility in modern cricket. He stressed that while he enjoys batting up the order, his primary focus remains contributing to the team’s success in any role assigned to him.
Rahul, who normally bats at No. 5, was pushed down a spot in the Champions Trophy but still made an impressive 174 runs in five innings in Dubai. His success highlighted his adaptability and dedication to improving his game.
"I have grown up playing in the top order. From my first competitive match in Mangalore at 11 to my early days for India, I have been a top-order batter. It's where I feel most comfortable," Rahul said.
However, he acknowledged the need for flexibility in team sports. "You don’t always get to choose your role. Over the years, I’ve learned to embrace that and give my best wherever needed," he added in an interaction with JioHotstar.

Rahul, who has captained Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants, reportedly declined the opportunity to lead Delhi Capitals in the upcoming IPL.
Reflecting on the IPL auction, he admitted it can shape a player’s career. "As a captain, I’ve seen the pressure of building a squad, but for players, it's even tougher. Your career is at stake. I was nervous, even anxious, but I knew this was the right move," he said.
Spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel is now the frontrunner to lead DC this season.
After a disappointing stint with LSG, Rahul is eager for a fresh start with Delhi Capitals. "I’m happy to join DC. Parth Jindal is a close friend, and we’ve often discussed cricket. This will be a new experience — my fourth or fifth IPL team. I feel both excited and nervous."
DC have never won the IPL, but Rahul is optimistic. "The squad looks balanced, with a mix of experience and young talent. Playing alongside stars like Mitchell Starc, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav will be exciting. I can’t wait for the season to begin."
Rahul also reflected on his international journey, having remained unbeaten on 34 in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand.
"My career has had highs and lows, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Now, I look forward to the next decade, applying my experience, growing as a player, and winning more matches for my team," he concluded.
