Alita: Battle Angel, the beloved sci-fi saga about a powerful cyborg girl with a mysterious past, has reached another major milestone. While fans continue to hope for a sequel to the 2019 live-action film, the manga universe has just taken a big step forward: the Battle Angel Alita: Mars Chronicle manga has officially concluded, and a brand-new series is on the way.
Mars Chronicle Ends with Chapter 56
The final chapter of Mars Chronicle—titled “Keun Kilborne”—was released in two parts, with the concluding segment dropping on March 17, 2025, via Kodansha’s Comic Days platform. This marks the end of the third major installment in Yukito Kishiro’s long-running manga series, which began in the early 1990s with Battle Angel Alita (Gunnm) and continued with Last Order.
Chapters 52–56 completed the “Hexenhaus” arc and finally revealed key details of Alita’s past on Mars. As a prequel, Mars Chronicle gave fans a deeper look at her childhood and the events that shaped her into the warrior known as Gally. With the end of this arc, the long-hidden secrets of Alita’s origin have finally been brought to light.
Alita’s Story Isn’t Over Yet
Although Mars Chronicle has ended, the journey of Alita is far from over. Creator Yukito Kishiro has confirmed that a brand-new manga series is in development and is expected to debut later in 2025. This upcoming fourth installment will continue the story beyond Mars Chronicle and is set to include Erica, a key character from the previous arc.
Fans can expect the new series to explore Alita’s future, expanding on the world-building and philosophical depth that the franchise is known for.
Where to Read
All chapters of Mars Chronicle, including the newly released final ones, are available digitally on Kodansha’s Comic Days app. For English-speaking readers, the series is also licensed by Kodansha USA.
Hope for a Movie Sequel Still Alive
Although there’s still no official word on a sequel to the 2019 Alita: Battle Angel movie, the conclusion of Mars Chronicle and the announcement of a new manga series have reignited fan interest. As Alita’s story moves into its next phase, hopes remain high that her cinematic journey will one day continue as well.
