A trip to the mountains turned into a nightmare for a woman from Delhi after she accused a Nainital police officer of physically assaulting her and her friend during a routine check. The matter quickly gained attention after a video she posted online went viral, sparking outrage on social media and triggering a police inquiry that’s now facing public criticism.
The incident took place in Uttarakhand’s Ramgarh area. The woman, Yati Sharma, shared a video on her social media where she can be seen confronting the officer. In the clip, she questions why she and her friend were stopped while other travellers were allowed to go without any checks.
“Why weren’t they stopped?”In the video, Yati can be heard saying, “Just now, two men went wearing the same kind of helmet. Why weren't they stopped?” She claimed that even though they were following all traffic rules and had all the necessary documents, the officer singled them out and physically assaulted them.
According to her, the incident escalated quickly when the officer allegedly slapped both of them. “He literally slapped us,” she wrote in the caption of her video post. “My friend who was with me was hurt. Half of her face is swollen. I am not gonna show it here, but she was so badly shaken up by this entire incident.” She also alleged that when she tried to record the incident on her phone, the officer snatched it from her and threw it away.

Police deny assault, claim traffic violationResponding to the viral video, the Nainital Police shared a different side of the story. In their statement, they said Yati's two-wheeler didn’t have a number plate, the required registration papers were missing, and her friend sitting behind her wasn’t wearing a helmet.
“The viral video related to a vehicle challan on social media is from Chowki Ramgarh area, where a two-wheeler without a number plate was stopped during checking by Chowki Incharge U.N. Gulab Kamboj,” the statement read.
The police added, “The vehicle did not have registration documents, and the pillion rider was not wearing a helmet. There was a dispute between the driver and the policeman, whose video was shared by the driver on social media.”
Commuter shares ‘proof’, calls out police versionAfter the police released their statement, Yati shared a second video in response. This video had time-stamped visuals which, she said, clearly showed both her and her friend wearing helmets and the scooter having a visible number plate. She also claimed that all the required documents were shown at the time and accused the police of twisting the facts. Calling their claims false, she said, “It was a cover-up to dodge accountability.”
Inquiry ordered, public awaits answersAmid the growing controversy, the Nainital Police have confirmed that an internal inquiry is underway to look into what exactly happened during the checkpoint incident. So far, no disciplinary action has been taken.
The videos have sparked a lot of conversation online. Many people are showing support for Yati, while others are asking for a fair and honest investigation. The incident has also started a wider discussion about how the police behave during routine checks, how common people are treated, and why some situations suddenly get out of hand without any clear reason.
